It’s Time for Silicon Valley To Finish Its Job of Disrupting the Racist Drug War
It Has Been Racist From The Start and Bigotry Can not End Up Until It Does
By– Richard Cowan
Mark Zuckerberg, the Icarus of the Internet, is disputing his own employees about whether Facebook must be accountable for fixing the lies of specific high ranking politicians. The response appears apparent, however are they really prepared to choose which lies need their personal attention?
Icarus was undone by attempting to fly expensive and to be above it all, but there is another Greek myth that is more ¨ down to Earth ¨ actually.
As I see the seemingly endless torrent of prohibitionist propaganda, I am reminded of the Greek myth about Hercules and the stables of King Augeas.
The term “Augean stables” means a huge mess, because King Augeas had a large variety of livestock, which were rounded up into the stables every night, but nobody cleaned up after them. (Governments constantly expect other individuals to do their grunt work.)
As a consequence, the stables overruned with what the Greeks called “drug education.”
As in Hercules’ time, the federal government provides the fodder at one end, and the other end– the Greeks called it the “media”– produced the unavoidable item. It stank to high paradise, however it seemed impossible to do anything about it.
You could not smell it from the much better areas, and besides, if everyone who lived near the stables would simply stop breathing, it would not be a problem.
However, as the story goes, Hercules was offered the job of cleaning up the stables, however he had to do it all in just one day. Plainly not even he could shovel that fast, and I know just how he should have felt.
Being a superhero, Hercules handled the task, and the way he did it gives me hope. He diverted a number of rivers to stream through the stables and flushed them out.
Meanwhile back in the real life, what does this involve the war on us? What are the “rivers” that we can divert?
One idea in fact comes from the misconception. When King Augeas declined to pay Hercules, as he had assured he would, the king’s child told the truth, and was banished for doing so.
( He was sent to a place the Greeks called “rehabilitation”, which he said reminded him of his dad’s stables.)
On the other hand back in the genuine world, the American people are getting fed up with the smell of the lies that are being told to them– apparently to secure them.
For apparent factors, the existing crisis in the ” criminal justice system ¨is focused on race, however it should also be obvious that these problems are inextricably linked to what we call the Drug War. Second, the Drug War is a “legacy” of the world that Silicon Valley, aka the Internet, has actually partially interfered with and now it needs to complete the job.
The Drug War, and Cannabis Restriction, (it’s a ¨ function, not a bug ¨ )are still supported by an enormous propaganda project mislabeled as Drug Education. Simply the Drug Czar ´ s office (Office of National Drug Control Policy) has a budget plan of $3791 million.
The 2019 Budget for the National Institute for Drug Abuse was $1,419,844,000 None of this cash was for real ¨ law enforcement”. And how would we represent the $3.4 billion to pay for real estate federal drug war detainees?
The biggest financial expense of the Drug War would have to be counted in the damage done to the lives of its targets.
In the 2002 research study ” The Impact of Incarceration on Wage Movement and Inequality,” researcher Bruce Western “found that incarceration can permanently change a person’s life course, disrupt key life transitions, and damage access to stable employment.
According to Western’s research study, the loss of earnings takes place partially due to the fact that wages increase at a slower rate following incarceration.
And think what … Blacks are nearly four times as likely to be jailed for cannabis as whites, despite the fact that cannabis use rates are really comparable. And the history of cannabis restriction is ridiculously racist.
Anyone who wants to talk about racism in America, and particularly racism and the police, should face the Drug War and cannabis restriction or they are just poseurs.
Anybody who talks about defunding the cops and protecting minority communities without resolving the Drug War, starting with cannabis prohibition, is just avoiding the challenging decisions that have actually to be made.
It disrupted the old journalism and the old political order.
Speak, shout, yell, text, Tweet and email however make yourself heard. It is literally within your reaches.
What have you done for freedom today?
